Race Recap
An awesome afternoon of foil racing for the 2024 West Coast Downwinder. The seabreeze filled in early and we had a good 20 knots of wind along the race course. Stand-out performances from local boy Andrew Bell who managed to keep pace with the professional foilers on a Code 850S, closely followed by another West Aussie local Hugh “The Foil Project” Mitchell. Most notable performances were the father and son duo of Kurt and Gareth Mumford hailing from Esperance, WA. Kurt won the prize for youngest competitor in the field at the age of 15 will no doubt be chasing the lead pack in the years to come. The international YouTube sensation Jason “Downwind Drifter” Watson graced us with his Jesus like presence floating on water along with his band of Kiwi mates in Scott and Jackson Keon and Jon McGettigan. Hopefully we will see more Kiwi’s take the journey over the ditch and head to West Oz for racing in 2025. The longest travelled International racer went to Richard Boudia from France who managed a respectable 16th place slightly handicapped by his limited equipment choice as he was missing his small race foils. The Ladies fleet had three local entrants all from Western Australia. A very close battle fought at the front between Code Foil riders Krystal Cotterill and Angela Juengling finishing withing minutes of each other. Taking a very respectable third place was Aya Okano riding an OG Art999, hopefully MrAxis can hook Aya up with a Hot New Fireball to get her up to speed with the front runners! There was a long list of fresh racers the Perth East Coast of Australia for whom the West Coast Downwinder was their first long distance foil race. Well done to all for making it to the start line and signing up. Hopefully in 2025 we can see over 100 people enter the WA Race Week foil division.
